1、 Problem diagnosis first
Before carrying out any remediation, it is necessary to identify the main obstacles present in the soil. Common problems include: poor soil compaction and aeration, low organic matter content, acid-base imbalance (over acidic or over alkaline), salt accumulation (especially in northern and snowmelt affected areas), heavy metal pollution (such as parks converted from old industrial areas), and microbial community imbalance caused by agricultural residues during maintenance.
It is recommended to adopt a combination of "appearance judgment+simple on-site testing+laboratory sampling" to focus on monitoring pH value, conductivity, organic matter, and typical heavy metal content.
2、 Physical Remediation: Improving Soil Structure
Physical repair is the foundation for addressing issues of compaction and poor drainage.
Deep loosening and replacement of soil
For severely hardened or construction waste landfill areas, a deep plowing of at least 60 centimeters is required to remove debris such as stones and ash. If the topsoil completely loses its function, it can be replaced with guest soil, but priority should be given to protecting the original tree roots.
Ventilation and Drainage
Within the projection range of lawns or trees, drill holes (with a diameter of 5-8 centimeters, a depth of 50-80 centimeters, and a spacing of 1-1.5 meters) and fill them with ceramic particles or coarse sand to establish vertical ventilation channels. Combining the installation of concealed pipes or excavation of drainage ditches to lower the groundwater level and prevent waterlogging.
Covering and moisturizing
Covering the surface of tree discs or flower beds with 5-10 centimeters of organic coverings (such as pine scales, broken bark, walnut shells) can effectively reduce water evaporation, suppress weeds, buffer soil temperature changes, and slowly replenish organic matter as the coverings decay.
3、 Chemical remediation: regulating acidity, alkalinity, and salinity
Chemical regulation is more efficient for large-scale saline alkali or acidified soils.
Improvement of acidic soil
The soil in rainy areas in the south tends to be slightly acidic. Silicon calcium potassium magnesium fertilizer, dolomite powder or plant ash can be applied, with a dosage of 50-150 kilograms per acre depending on acidity. Pay attention to spreading in batches and mixing well with the topsoil to avoid excessive concentration in local areas.

Commonly found in gardens in North China and coastal areas. The use of desulfurization gypsum (mainly composed of calcium sulfate) can replace sodium ions on soil colloids, combined with flood irrigation and washing. At the same time, it is recommended to use humic acid fertilizers or potassium humate, whose synergistic effect can reduce the stress of salt on plant roots. For areas damaged by road snow melting agents, it is necessary to promptly irrigate and drain salt with fresh water in spring.
Heavy metal passivation
For mild cadmium, lead, and zinc pollution, apatite, sepiolite, or biochar can be applied. These materials reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals through adsorption and precipitation reactions, making them difficult for plants to absorb. After passivation, it is necessary to track and monitor to confirm compliance.
4、 Bioremediation: Rebuilding Healthy Microecology
This is the most sustainable restoration path, with the core being the restoration of soil vitality.
Increase the use of high-quality organic materials
It's not just using raw feces. It is recommended to use fully decomposed garden waste compost, earthworm castings, or bacterial residue. These materials are rich in humus and beneficial microorganisms, which can significantly enhance the stability of soil aggregates. When applied, it can be applied in grooves or holes, with 3-5 kilograms per square meter, twice a year.
Inoculate functional microorganisms
Selecting microbial agents for specific problems: Bacillus subtilis inhibits soil borne diseases; Bacillus coagulans hydrolyze phosphorus and potassium; Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi coexist with tree roots and can greatly expand the range of nutrient absorption, making them particularly suitable for the rejuvenation of ancient trees. Fungi should be applied together with organic matter to avoid using them together with fungicides.
Green manure and mulching crops
In large areas of sparse forest land or renewal plots, shade tolerant green manure such as February orchid, white clover, alfalfa, etc. can be planted. After the growing season, it is directly plowed into the soil to increase organic matter and break the compaction. The rhizobia inherent in leguminous plants can also fix nitrogen in the air.
5、 Typical Case Reference
Case 1: Soil compaction and rejuvenation in northern urban parks
Due to long-term trampling by visitors, the soil bulk density in the lawn area of the park is as high as 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter, and there is almost no grass growing. The solution is to first drill holes and ventilate in spring (with a diameter of 3 centimeters and a depth of 15 centimeters), then spread a mixture of earthworm castings and biochar (2 tons per acre), and then replant durable dogtooth roots mixed with tall fescue. After one year, the soil bulk density decreased to 1.3 grams per cubic centimeter, and the lawn coverage recovered to 85%.
Case 2: Heavy metal remediation of green spaces renovated from industrial heritage sites
Originally, the soil around the electroplating factory exceeded the standards for zinc and chromium. Using chemical passivation combined with plant remediation: first apply sea foam stone and phosphate fertilizer, plow and mix well, then plant centipede grass and southeast Sedum that have the ability to accumulate heavy metals, and regularly harvest and remove the aboveground parts. After three years, the leaching concentration of heavy metals in the soil will decrease by 70%, and the planting of ordinary ornamental plants will meet safety standards.
6、 Daily maintenance suggestions
Repair is a continuous process. Attention during maintenance: Avoid excessive cleaning of fallen leaves, and crush them on site and return them to the field; Reduce the use of chemical herbicides and single fertilizers, and switch to controlled-release fertilizers or organic-inorganic compound fertilizers; Irrigation adopts the method of frequent watering with small amounts of water or drip irrigation to prevent salt accumulation caused by excessive flooding. Conduct a comprehensive soil health assessment at least once every two years.
There is no "one trick" for garden soil remediation. The most effective strategy is often based on physical improvement, chemical regulation to solve emergencies, and bioremediation to provide long-term power. Based on the specific obstacle type, budget, and maintenance level of the plot, selecting a combination of two to three methods for application usually yields significant results within a growing season.
